DIET AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH
We often associate our diets with how we feel physically, but did you know that it also affects your emotional health? Today we will be discussing the effects that your diet has on your emotional health!
GUT HEALTH AND SEROTONIN
One of the biggest reasons it’s important to have good gut health is because most of your serotonin is produced there! When you aren’t eating healthy foods consistently, it becomes harder for you to produce the proper amount of serotonin since your digestive tract isn’t getting the nutrients it needs to function properly. Ensuring that your diet is full of probiotics and good bacteria will help you feel better overall.
Foods that are high in probiotics are easier to find than you may think! Foods that have been fermented contain high amounts of healthy bacteria needed for good gut health. This includes yogurt, kimchi, and certain cheeses. When you’re selecting your fermented foods, make sure that they are safely unpasteurized and don’t contain added sugars.
GOOD FOOD FOR BRAIN DEVELOPMENT
No matter how old we are, our brains never stop developing. Every day they are creating new pathways and working hard to learn and adapt to new environments and situations. Foods full of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are essential to improving brain function overall. These nutrients can be found in foods such as nuts, berries, and fish. If you find that you have a hard time getting these into your diet, Omegas is a great daily fish oil supplement to take!
BE KIND TO YOURSELF!
Something important to keep in mind while you are working on changing your diet is that everyone makes mistakes! No one is perfect, and you shouldn’t expect yourself to be. Be sure to allow yourself to eat foods that you enjoy, just in moderation. Don’t be hard on yourself for indulging in a treat every once in a while! As long as you are doing your best to make healthier choices overall, a few mistakes here and there don’t matter.
When changing your diet and lifestyle, it’s important to have a good support system to cheer you on. You can share your struggles and wins with them, as well as ask for support in any specific area you may need it. You could find a group of friends that are also wanting to eat healthier and then plan a lunch with everyone at the end of your transformation so you all have something to work toward. Or you could have your spouse adjust their diet, too. Then, every once in a while, plan a fun date night where you allow yourselves to have a treat! Just because you are working to eat healthier doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of foods you love.
